Ruth Carter | The Explorer IV Support Unit is a mobile intravenous (IV) product developed for use in paediatric wards, used to house an IV pump, IV drip and mains cable. There are currently no paediatric IV stands on the market, offering more than a coloured ‘pole’. Existing IV stands restrict children’s mobility and freedom of play, especially for younger children. Low levels of activity and play can have severe effects on patients, including withdrawal and regression. Children often experience high levels of anxiety during hospital stays, mostly triggered by ‘scary’ equipment and surroundings. The Explorer IV support unit consists of a trolley with a removable hard-shell backpack. The trolley and backpack together are normally for use by children aged 3 – 8, whilst the use of the backpack alone is designed for older children. This is due to pump height restrictions and guidelines for children carrying backpacks. The Explorer IV Support Unit is aimed at allowing children the freedom to relax and play more within hospital environments. This should in turn create a more homely and fun environment, therefore aiding the healing process.Pockets on the side of the backpack allow children to store personal items, therefore making the product feel less like a piece of hospital equipment. |
